Faculty Guide - Department of Social Sciences
A Guide to Teaching and Expectations in the KVCC Department of Social Sciences

SPRING 2018 EDITION

Welcome to teaching in the Department of Social Sciences at Kennebec Valley Community College!

These online documents have been created to serve as a guide to the expectations we have for your performance. These are mostly SUGGESTIVE ideas, but there are instances in which they are PRESCRIPTIVE (required). Click on the links below to review the different sections.

NEWS FOR SPRING 2018

NEW PSYCHOLOGY PROGRAM

We have opened enrollment for the new Associate of Science in Psychology degree program at KVCC! At this point we have ONE student!

The official GRAND OPENING of the program will be in the Fall of 2018.

Over the next 6 months we will be seeking assistance in the development of a number of core and elective Psychology classes. This is a very fun time!

RESOURCES

Room 222 in Averill is transforming into a multi-use "Maker Space" with the help of the Library Staff. We have video recording and editing equipment now...and we may be getting additional resources such as 3D printers, SWIFT Coding Tools, and LEGO Serious Play!

Stay tuned for announcements as these resources become available for both Faculty and Student use!

UPDATED COURSE POLICIES AND EXPECTATIONS

You will continue to find a document in your courses called "Course Polices and Expectations."

I've created this document to lay the groundwork for basic expectations within our courses. I have updated this document to place specific items into categories for better understanding. I've also added some additional thoughts on late work and withdrawing students from classes.

At all times, you the teacher, can overide these policies...let these serve as well learned guidlines that you can lean on!

Please send me any comments, corrections, or suggestions...this is a LIVE document, so any changes that I make will update immediatly in every class!

UPDATED STUDENT RESOURCES PAGE

I have also updated and cleaned up the Student Resources Page. Tutorials for all things Blackboard are included in this page.

Faculty Job Description and Evaluation

These pages provide links to the Faculty Job Description and include the Department's procedures for evaluating Faculty performance each semester. You will find a link to an MS Excel file that is used for this purpose.

In addition to understanding the Job Description and Evaluation process, each semester you have to submit an "Availability Form" that outlines your available hours and courses. Complete this course and email it to the Department Chair when the schedule for the coming semester is released.

Faculty Orientation

These pages describe basic policies and practices at KVCC. In addition, you will find links to tutorials on how to use the Portal and Blackboard. (This particular document is not part of this "Faculty Guidance" so you will need to use the "back" button to return to this index page.)

Blackboard Standardization

The Department is currently standardizing the use of Blackboard in all classes. Each course in the Department is required to have a Blackboard course website. Visit these pages to learn about this initiative.

Essential Learning Outcomes

The Department has mapped Essential Learning Outcome evaluation into nearly every course. These outcome are measured through standard assignments that have been included in the Blackboard shell for your course. Visit these pages to learn more about this initiative.

Expectations for Teaching Online

In these pages you will find the Department-specific expectations for teaching online. Please be sure to view these pages to understand these expectations.

Bio Pages

Another initiative going on this Fall is the creation of official Bio Pages for each of you. Clicking on the link above will bring you to a page that has each of the bios on it. My goal is that every Faculty and staff will complete one of these by the end of the semester. You can then insert these links into your courses in the Course Information section.
